Sam Burgess made 'scapegoat' in rugby union - Iestyn Harris

Dual code international Iestyn Harris says criticism of Sam Burgess following his switch to rugby union is unfair.

Dual code international Iestyn Harris says England's Sam Burgess has been made a 'scapegoat' during the Rugby World Cup and believes the former South Sydney player will be a success if he chooses to stay in rugby union.

Burgess was controversially picked as a centre for England's World Cup campaign after switching codes in 2014.

The 26-year-old Bath player is now rumoured to be considering a return to rugby league with his former club South Sydney Rabbitohs in Australia.

Harris, who played both codes internationally, says criticism of Burgess has been unfair.

鈥淚 think Sam got let down a little bit because changing codes is so difficult to do," he said.

鈥淗e鈥檚 only been in the game two minutes so to ask him to perform at that elite level is very difficult and I think he鈥檚 been made a little bit of a scapegoat in my opinion.

鈥淚 would like to see him to stay, I think he鈥檒l be a success if he stays long term and I would hate to see him just move away and go back into rugby league without really cracking the code like we know he can do,鈥 he added.
