It's been hailed as the ultimate photobomb and has made an internet sensation out of a deer called Maggie.

Photographer Megan Rion was taking a picture of a baby at Sam Houston State Park in Louisiana, when the doe popped into frame unexpectedly.

The resulting image of Maggie posing behind one-month-old baby Connor has now been viewed more than four million times online. The photographer who captured the endearing moment admits it was all down to chance.

She says, "Maggie was about 15 feet from the set-up and my assistant grabbed an ear of the ornamental corn...to try and get her to turn towards the camera. But rather than just turn, she actually walks up to get a little closer, and I think that's when she noticed the baby.

"After she started walking towards us I backed up to get the shot. After I knew I'd got the shot I wanted I walked up closer just to keep her calm, and back her up a little tad but she wasn't backing up, she was just very calmly standing there. I scratched her behind her ear and she kind of went on about her business."
