Why I tried to smuggle an Afghan child into the UK
A father of four from West Yorkshire has admitted trying to smuggle a four-year-old Afghan girl into the UK from Calais.
Rob Lawrie wanted to bring her to live with relatives in Britain. He told 5 live: "All rationality left me and I knew what I had to do".
Rob was stopped in Calais, where the authorities found two Eritrean children who had sneaked into the back of his van. He's due in court in France in January and could be jailed for up to five years. "I did the wrong thing, no doubt. I'm not saying I'm a hero."
