Colin Welland: 'Fast asleep, still clutching his Oscar'
Tributes have been made to the British actor and Oscar-winning writer, Colin Welland, who died aged 81, from Alzheimer's disease.
Welland appeared in Z Cars and the Ken Loach film "Kes", before winning his Oscar in 1982 for the Chariots of Fire screenplay.
Ben Cross, who played Harold Abrahams in Chariots of Fire, remembers seeing Colin after winning his Academy Award. He says, "At the end of the Oscars we had a wonderful night in Los Angeles, and in the early afternoon I opened the curtains of my hotel room and I looked down at the pool and there was Colin, God Bless him, asleep on a sun-bed and having dropped from his arms, was the Oscar and it was lying there. That is an image I shall never, ever forget."
He added: "He was a normal man who had greatness thrust upon him.".
