Disabled soldier will walk for first time to lay wreath
Double Amputee Sergeant Rick Clements who lost both legs aims to lay wreath in Blackpool. "It will be an amazing thing"
Sergeant Rick Clements, who lost both legs in Afghanistan, will walk in public for the first time this weekend, as he uses his new prosthetic legs to lay a wreath at the Remembrance Sunday ceremony in Blackpool.
It's five years since he stepped on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan. Rick told ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 5 live that he counts himself "very lucky" to be alive.
Rick lost both legs and his heart stopped twice as he was rushed to hospital in a military helicopter. Five years on he is learning to walk on new prosthetic legs, and described the feeling of being able to walk again as "amazing".
He told 5 live Daily: "I'm very slow, I can only do a short distance. That's why we set the initial goal to do a short distance and lay that wreath at the Cenotaph. Compared to two years or even twelve months ago, I've come on leaps and bounds. To do able to do it in public and on my own with the aid of crutches and a stick will be an amazing thing."
Rick's story will feature in a special documentary on Monday 9th November at 9pm, showing on Forces TV (Sky Channel 264, Virgin 277, Freesat 652)
