JFK limo licence plates nearly ended up in the bin

The licence plates from the limousine in which President John F Kennedy was assassinated were nearly thrown away 52 years ago, but they were saved by Willard Hess, whose company customised and armoured government cars.
A secret service agent threw the original plates "in the garbage can," says Willard's daughter, Jane Walker.
"My father asked the secret service if he could have them. They said, 'What do you want them for?' He said, 'I want to put them in my collection.' So they allowed him to get them out of the garbage can."
The yellow plates bear the number GG-300, and Jane says her father "had them in his house, in his study, up in his bookshelf, in between some books."
"Nobody really knew they were here, unless they started talking about the assassination and the Kennedy car. Every once in a while, he would bring them out, and show them to his friends. Then they would go back up in the bookshelf."
"It was very hard for me to get rid them of them," she adds, "but I felt like it was time to pass them on, and to pass on the legacy of Kennedy."
The licence plates have just sold at auction for $100,000.
