Ex-prescription drug user took 60 pills a day
An ex-prescription drug addict has told 5 live she "went from taking eight tablets a day to 60 a day" after being given the opioid tablets by her doctor.
Cathryn Kemp made her comments after it was revealed in a Canadian study that prescription painkillers are acting as a "gateway drug" for women.
Cathryn, who started taking the tablets after her GP prescribed them for severe pancreatitis, said she "would not admit" that she was "in any way addicted" to the opioid drugs.
The study, by scientists from the McMaster University in Ontario, found that 52% of women and 38% of men addicted to opioids were first exposed to the drugs when their doctor prescribed them painkillers.
