Why do fewer white British children go to uni?
Research published by the Institute for Fiscal Studies shows that just under one in three white British pupils go on to university.
That makes them the least likely ethnic group in the UK to go on to higher education, with students from Chinese backgrounds the most likely to go on to study at university.
The chief inspector of schools, Sir Michael Wilshaw, gave evidence to a House of Lords committee about this issue. He said that white British children from low income families struggling at university entry level was a "big problem" for education.
He told ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 5 live: "The big problem though is white British children from low income backgrounds who are doing very badly at university entrant level. This is a real problem. Two thirds of youngsters that are disadvantaged come from this particular background, and unless we crack this one, we will not be able to close the attainment gap."
