Jonah Lomu's doctor: I didn't expect this so soon
The doctor who treated Jonah Lomu throughout his career was shocked to hear the former New Zealand wing had died. Lomu, 40, suffered from a rare kidney disease but was recently reported to be in a “good place”.
Dr John Mayhew said: "We had our ups and downs medically and a lot of his career was bedevilled with his chronic kidney condition. I didn't expect this so soon though [...] He recently told me that his ambition was to see his boys' 21st birthdays, unfortunately that won't be achieved because a catastrophic event has intervened."
Dr Mayhew explains how he tried to persuade Lomu to tell the media about his poor health but the star “refused to make any excuses for poor performance”.
