Graham Henry: Nobody knew what to expect from Lomu
Former New Zealand coach Graham Henry says Jonah Lomu was virtually unknown in his homeland when he made international debut in 1994, aged 19.
Lomu, who died today aged just 40, would go on to become rugby union’s biggest star but Henry admitted the giant wing “came from nowhere”. He added: “I got the impression that he was a last-minute selection for the 1995 World Cup. We didn't even know in this country how good he was so everybody was a bit apprehensive."
Henry, who coached the All Blacks between 2004 and 2011, added that Lomu quickly settled to the international stage: "He loved it and it was just like playing in his back yard. The only difference was that 80,000 people were watching him."
