The mother of a high-profile transgender prisoner believes the death of a transgender woman in prison is "absolutely disgusting".

The Prison Service has started an investigation into the death of 21-year-old Vicky Thompson, who died while serving a 12-month sentence at a men's prison.

She had said to friends that she would take her own life if sent to a male jail.

Vicky Thompson was born male but had identified as female since her teens.

Jackie Brooklyn is the mother of Tara Hudson, a transgender woman who has recently transferred from a men's jail to a women's jail.

She claimed her daughter was recently told that she was "neither male nor female" so is unable to "join in activities" and is segregated from other prisoners.

The Ministry of Justice told Radio 5 live Eastwood Park prison where Tara Hudson is being held treats prisoners fairly while ensuring their security and that of others is maintained.
"Prisoners are offered educational courses with access to the library and the opportunity to exercise."
