Mother with post-natal depression was ‘scared’ of baby
An investigation by 5 live has found a 20% shortfall in the number of specialist beds for new mums with mental health problems.
This leaves women having to travel hundreds of miles away from their homes to get the help they need.
Mother Eve Canavan, who struggled with post-natal depression after the birth of son Joe, said she was “scared” of her baby and was left at “melt down point” by the time she left hospital after giving birth.
“I couldn’t be in the same room on my own as him. I felt like I had made a terrible, terrible, terrible mistake… I started to feel that only death was the only logical way out.”
She eventually recovered but had to travel from London to Nottingham to get specialist hospital treatment.
