Ferguson was '99% sure' Ronaldo would return
Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson expected Cristiano Ronaldo to return to the club, according to ex-defender Patrice Evra. Portugal forward Ronaldo joined Real Madrid for £80m in 2009, but current United boss Louis van Gaal said this week he wants the 30-year-old back at Old Trafford.
According to Evra, a fortnight before Ferguson retired at the end of the 2012-13 season, the Scot told him: "I am 99% that Cristiano will return."
In the interview with Duncan Castles, Evra revealed that Ronaldo struggled on his return to Old Trafford for Real in the Champions League in March 2013.
Former France defender said: "Cristiano said to me, 'All night I couldn't sleep. I even had a nosebleed because I had too much emotion.’"
