Only three Northern White Rhinos left after Nola dies
One of the world's last remaining northern white rhinos has died in a zoo in the United States. Nola, who was 41 years old, had been a popular attraction at San Diego Zoo Safari Park since 1989. Only three northern white rhinos remain on earth.
Zoo Keeper Rick Schwartz, who looked after Nola, said he was hopeful she might breed when she was younger, but it was not to be. "If rhinos don’t breed by the proper age they tend not to be fertile in older years," he said, adding:
"All may not be lost as we plan to use stored frozen cells of Northern White Rhinos, and plant embryos of them in Southern White Rhinos who will act as surrogates".
