The blue-and-white checkered dress Judy Garland wore as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz was snapped up at auction for $1.5 million in New York City.

It's believed to be one of ten made for the actress for her role as Dorothy, but one of only two that she actually wore on screen and Bonhams auction house said it comes complete with sweat marks around the neck.

The price exceeded expectations. It had been expected to sell for between $800,000 and $1.2 million. Bonham's head of Entertainment Memorabilia Catherine Williamson explained what was so special about it:
