Is Cumberbatch's Zoolander role 'transphobic'?
A transgender actress has told 5 live that it's too early to make judgements about Benedict Cumberbatch's transgender role in Zoolander 2 because people "don't know anything about the character" yet.
Annie Wallace, who plays transgender head teacher Sally St Claire in Hollyoaks, said of the role: "If Benedict Cumberbatch is playing someone who will be a figure of fun, then it's a shame that they're doing that in the 21st Century".
Annie made her comments after a petition set up to boycott the film gained over 11,500 signatures because the trailer is considered to be transphobic.
Annie, who was also a consultant on the part of Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, went on to say, "the petition does have a decent point to make" as someone who is "not a trans actor is going to find it very difficult" to accurately portray a transgender person.
