Rainforest inside a giant greenhouse
Jack Stewart steps into the rainforest at Biosphere 2 - an Earth systems science research facility in Oracle, Arizona. It was originally built to house an ambitious experiment created to see if humans could live on another planet. Eight volunteers lived in the sealed environment for two years to see if they could be entirely self-sufficient. The experiment received much publicity but was beset by problems. Now the giant Earth model is used for controlled scientific experiments to see how certain environments might respond to climate change. Jack Stewart enters the rainforest, where Professor Joost van Harren, from the University of Arizona, has just started a drought experiment. He has turned off the taps that feed this sealed giant greenhouse and the effects of this lack of water can already be seen.
