Young Muslim in Rotherham: 'I don't feel safe here'
A young Muslim in Rotherham says she does not "feel safe" in the town because of Islamophobia.
A young Muslim has said that she does not "feel safe" in Rotherham because of Islamophobia.
Noor - we're not using her full name - was speaking after claims of an increase in attacks and threats against Muslims in South Yorkshire.
Speaking to Adrian Goldberg, Noor said that Islamophobia happens "very often" to her - and that she has been verbally abused in a supermarket and a bus.
Noor links the rise of far right marches - following the publication of the Jay report - as causes for rising tensions between Muslims and non-Muslims in the town.
"I don't go anywhere by myself," she added.
The organisation Tell MAMA, which monitors Islamophobia, says 29 anti-Muslim incidents have been reported to them so far this year in Rotherham, compared to 7 in 2014. And two in 2013. But there are concerns the number could be a lot higher.
Figures given to 5 live from South Yorkshire Police show a rise in racially motivated crimes in the region, continually over four years. When it comes to religion, the statistics show an increase in crime this year, compared to last.
Rotherham was the subject of the Jay report last year, which showed shocking levels of child exploitation in the town between 1997 and 2013. An estimated 1,400 children were abused by gangs of men, mainly of Pakistani heritage.
