Kellingley worker: It's a 'travesty' we won't mine again
Miners at a North Yorkshire colliery have finished their final shifts as the closure of the pit brings an end to centuries of deep coal mining in Britain.
Kellingley is what's known as a super-pit. It began producing coal in 1965 and was the first pit in Europe to produce a million tons of coal in a single year.
5 live's Jim Taylor spoke to reflective minor Phil Kelsey in the lamp room, after his last ever shift.
He said: It's a travesty really to leave a production face like it was this morning, and not cut it again. There is tons of coal down there, which they say is not viable.
