Motson on Jimmy Hill: 'An inspiration'
Match of the Day commentator John Motson has paid tribute to Jimmy Hill, who has died aged 87, calling him an ‘instigator, an innovator and an inspiration.’
Hill was one of the most influential figures in English football and as chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association, he led the campaign for the scrapping of maximum wages for professional footballers.
His other numerous roles in football included player, manager and chairman, as well as appearing on Match of the Day for over 20 years.
Hill was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2008.
“He had a great personality. He was irrepressible, good humoured and great company,” Motson said.
“He was an instigator, an innovator and an inspiration,” he added.
