The orchestra conductor who prevented bloodshed in East Germany
Kurt Masur, widely regarded as one of the world's greatest conductors, has died in the US at the age of 88. Renowned music critic Norman Lebrecht remembers his achievements as music director of the New York Philharmonic, but also his role in preventing bloodshed in East Germany.
