It's one of Peru's dark secrets: in the 1990s, around 350,000 Peruvian women and 25,000 men were reportedly sterilised without their consent. It was part of a national programme, brought in during the office of then-president Alberto Fujimori, who had argued that a lower birth rate would drive down poverty. Now the voices of those who feel their rights were violated are becoming louder and clearer, and a campaign for justice is gathering pace. The Quipu project is one initiative working with women in remote rural villages to help them share their stories. Co-director Rosemarie Lerner explains.
