The so-called Islamic State (IS) is widely known to hold large swathes of territory across Iraq and Syria, but it is also looking to expand.
Its fighters are already embedded in countries such as Afghanistan and Libya, while extremist groups such as Boko Haram in Nigeria have pledged their allegiance.
