Sir Tim Rice: Robert Stigwood was a ‘pioneer’

Lyricist Sir Tim Rice has paid tribute to the late Robert Stigwood, who helped bring his musicals Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita to the big screen.

Stigwood, the Australian impresario who bought Sir Tim and Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s management company and managed the Bee Gees and Cream, died on January 4 at the age of 81.

Speaking to 5 live's Phil Williams, Sir Tim said of Stigwood: “He was a unique figure, very successful and powerful in his day but he always remained very generous and very friendly.”

Sir Tim also described him as a “pioneer”, recalling how in 1961 Stigwood got actor John Leyton to sing ‘Johnny Remember Me’ during a TV show, which resulted in a number-one hit.
