A drama graduate said it was like a "Cinderella story" when she was asked to perform in the famous musical Into the Woods.

Melissa Bayern, 29, was watching the musical at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester when director Matthew Xia stepped out on stage to say the actress Gillian Bevan, who played the witch, was unwell.

On the night she was replaced by another cast member but friends encouraged Miss Bayern to put herself forward for the role. She emailed Mr. Xia some headshots and a clip of herself performing.

A few days later she received a call asking her to perform in the production and said she "packed her bag in seven minutes".

Miss Bayern took part in seven performances and said she "couldn't have asked for a better start" to her career.
