The animals frozen for 30 years brought back to life

Scientists in Japan have succeeded in reviving animals that have been frozen for 30 years.

Two microscopic water-dwelling organisms called tardigrades, also known as water bears, were resuscitated by researchers at the National Institute of Polar Research.

The creatures were retrieved from a frozen moss sample collected in Antarctica in 1983, which had been stored at -20°C, for just over three decades.

While one tardigrade died after 20 days, the other began reproducing.

Describing their appearance, lead researcher Megumu Tsujimoto told 5 live: “They have four pairs of legs with some claws on the tips and they crawl slowly.”
