In the 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, the colonial rulers Britai expelled the people of the Chagos Islands and gave the islands to the United States for use as a military base. The US says the base played a critical role in safeguarding America. Those who were forced to move away remain angry and believe they were cheated into moving to Mauritius.
