Eagles taught to ‘hunt’ drones
The Netherlands police force are training eagles to “hunt” drones in an effort to crack down on unauthorised usage.
Mark Wiebes, who is an innovation manager for the National Police in the Netherlands, told 5 live training is going well as the eagles “are focused and they never fail to catch the drones”.
The birds have been trained to stop the remote control gadgets by associated the drone with food. They 'hunt' the drone and trade it for "a piece of chicken". Mark Wiebes explained that the drones used in training are the “normal commercially available” ones, and don’t hurt the birds, but research is taking place into whether bigger motors would harm the bird, and if so, what measures can be taken to protect the birds.
