A former armed robber tells Phil how his life was changed by a rowing machine in prison.

John McAvoy was brought up in South London amongst a family where guns were the norm. His uncle was one of the Brinks Mat bullion robbers which in November 1983 saw a record £26 million in gold bullion stolen from Heathrow International trading estate.

John joined the "family business" at just 15.

It would take two stints in prison over a decade for him to have any empathy with his victims and any desire to change his criminal ways.
