'Our brand new home could be demolished'

Alex Hayden and John Venables, who only moved into their new home two weeks ago, but have now been told their new estate may be demolished to make way for a Thames crossing.

Speaking to 5 live's Adrian Chiles,

"I thought it was local residents who didn't like the new houses [...] we then got a letter from Highway England's Agency [...] it's unimaginable, it's humiliating and embarrassing".

John says when he got in touch with the council who told him, "they are proposals so until they become plans we don't tell the solicitor so even now it wouldn't show up on the searches."

Campaigners say this could happen to anyone because of a 'gaping hole' in the system used to warn people if the house they're buying is under threat. Highways England say this is the start of a consultation and a number of different routes are still being considered for the new crossing.
