Ex-gang member: Not always valid reason for stop and search
Concerns have been raised about police officers’ use of stop and search after an investigation, looking at 100 stop and search records across 43 police forces in England and Wales, found that 15% did not meet the legal requirement.
Jermaine Lawlor, a youth worker in East London and former gang member, said he has been stopped “many times” and often it hasn’t been conducted “in the right way,” adding a stop and search should be “explained clearly and logged appropriately”.
Chief Constable Sara Thornton is the National Police Chiefs' Council Chair, she says "The number of stop and search records which do not include reasonable grounds for suspicion has dropped from 27 per cent in 2013 to 15 per cent in 2015, which is evidence of progress.
However, I am disappointed that some forces are not complying fully with the Best Use of Stop and Search scheme. We will make sure this is addressed''.
