Scientists detect 'ground breaking' gravitational waves
Scientists in America have detected ripples in space that will 'revolutionise astronomy'.
They have observed the warping of space-time generated by the collision of two black holes more than a billion light-years from Earth.
Professor Martin Reeves, an Astronomer Royal, is convinced by the discovery that he believes is "important for a number of reasons".
He told 5 live Drive that it "opens up a window of new possibility onto the universe” and tells us a "great deal about the death of stars and how they evolve".
Albert Einstein first predicted the gravitational waves a century ago but they have only now been directly observed.
It's hoped the culmination of decades of searching will help scientists in their quest to fully understand gravity and the origins of the universe.
