A former NHS boss has told ѿý Radio 5 live that he fears his teenage son's cancer may have been caused by playing on artificial football pitches.
Nigel Maguire son Lewis has Hodgkin's Lymphoma and is now urging companies to stop building new 3G pitches until more research is done on the rubber which is used for the surface.
Nigel Maguire wants an investigation into the use of 3G pitches along with a similar inquiry in the US, "I'm asking for a similar review to be undertaken by our government, to look at the available evidence and in the meantime have a moratorium on building new 3G [pitches] and finally for schools and clubs to issue guidance to reduce the exposure particularly of goalkeepers and rugby players", he said.
The Football Association says there are more than 500 registered 3G pitches in England and a spokesperson said "We are aware of the concerns with 3G pitches. We are monitoring industry research as well as conducting our own". The Sports and Play Construction Association which is the UK trade organisation for the sports and play facility construction industry said "There have been numerous research studies carried out worldwide on the use of rubber crumb in sports pitches to assess any potential health impact. The current consensus from those studies is that the rubber crumb poses no significant health risk.”
