The most dangerous places for a woman to live
One of the most senior women in the UN has said the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman are “Syria and Iraq” because of the rise of extremist groups there.
Irina Bokova is the director general of UNESCO, the UN’s education and cultural organisation. She said “whenever there is conflict in those areas, we see women bearing the burden of rape and suffering”.
But she said “there is much more commitment to doing things” and hopes we can “stand up against rape and violence”.
She was speaking as part of a 5 live Breakfast project, working with ѿý School Report, looking at why women in Syria have been disproportionately affected by the conflict there.
