One of the most senior women in the UN has said the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman are 鈥淪yria and Iraq鈥� because of the rise of extremist groups there.

Irina Bokova is the director general of UNESCO, the UN鈥檚 education and cultural organisation. She said 鈥渨henever there is conflict in those areas, we see women bearing the burden of rape and suffering鈥�.

But she said 鈥渢here is much more commitment to doing things鈥� and hopes we can 鈥渟tand up against rape and violence鈥�.

She was speaking as part of a 5 live Breakfast project, working with 蜜芽传媒 School Report, looking at why women in Syria have been disproportionately affected by the conflict there.
