Dog run over to 'minimise risks to motorists'

There's been a huge outcry about a decision by North Wales Police to deliberately run over a dog, which was running loose on the unlit A55 in Conwy in the early hours of Monday morning.

North Wales Police say their officers made several attempts to catch it, but couldn't bring it under control and one officer was bitten.

In a statement, the force says "the only safe option was to run the dog over at sufficient speed to ensure that it was destroyed and would not suffer".

Doug Bolton, a former traffic officer with Staffordshire police and now a forensic investigator, said it was "a drastic action, but possibly justified".
He said "you've got to think of the safety of people […] there was potential for a serious accident".
