Theatre-goer Xavier Buxton told 5 live how he fainted while watching scenes depicting torture during the National Theatre's latest production.

Four other people have also passed out at Cleansed, a Sarah Kane play about a university that is turned into a sadistic totalitarian institution.

Xavier was surprised at his response as he has never fainted before.

"I was out for about 20 minutes," he said. "I passed out on my friend who was next to me. The staff said I was not the first."

Despite his reaction Xavier said he wanted to see the play again.

"I think it's our duty to confront things which are deeply horrible," he said.
