Father: My son killed a man when speeding

Father gives an emotional account about the results of his son's "reckless" driving.

A father has given an emotional account of how his son's "reckless" driving lead to the death of 60-year-old man.

Peter explained that his son had been driving on a dual carriageway where the speed limit was 30 miles per hour, when he hit the man.

Speaking to 5 live's Nicky Campbell, he added that on the "few occasions" that he had been in his son's car, he felt he had "the mentality of a 17-year-old boy racer" despite being in his 30s.

His son has admitted causing death by careless driving and is awaiting sentencing. He's expecting a prison sentence. Peter said, "I want to go and support him because he's my son, but in another way, it's the last place on earth I want to be".

More than two thousand drivers were caught doing over a hundred miles an hour on the UK's roads last year. The figures come from a Freedom of Information request to all 45 police forces in the UK by 5 live. 42 of them responded.

The National Police Chief Council Lead for Roads Policing, Chief Constable, Suzette Davenport said:
"Speed is a significant factor in fatal road accidents and extreme speed causes an even greater risk to road users."
