
Should bookmakers pay a tax to improve greyhound care?
Bookmakers who profit from greyhound racing should contribute to their welfare, say MPs, amid worries for the welfare of thousands of retired racing dogs.
The Association of British Bookmakers say 90% of betting shops contribute seven million pounds a year to the British Greyhound Racing Fund.
Norah McEllistrim, a greyhound racing trainer and trustee of Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare in Hersham, spoke to 5 live Daily’s Peter Allen about her concerns regarding funding.
She said: “Because it’s not a compulsory contribution, if they don’t want to give it, they don’t have to. The bookmakers must make it a compulsory contribution between all their members.â€
