Marian Anderson sings Oh What a Beautiful City
She was the first African-American soloist to sing at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1955 and performed at the White House for both Presidents Roosevelt and Kennedy. Her concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington in 1939 has gone down in history as a key moment in the civil rights movement in America. She was forced to perform this outdoor concert after she was denied access to another venue in Washington because of her race. In this extract from a 1951 concert Marian Anderson sings Oh What a Beautiful City. She was born on 27 February 1897.
