14 year old: I've checked social media at 3am

Daisy, a 14 year old pupil at Tarporley High School in Cheshire says social media is a habit as she attempts a digital detox challenge.

A pupil at Tarporley High School in Cheshire has described her social media habits, while taking part in a challenge to stay off-line.

The Digital Detox Challenge is a joint ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ collaboration between 5 live and School Report. Involving more than a thousand 11 to 18 year olds at Tarporley High School in Cheshire, the aim is to gain an insight into how reliant young people are on social media.

In an interview with 5 Live's Chris Warburton, 14-year-old pupil Daisy explained her reasons for using social media:

"It's something that you do, like on Snapchat you check people's stories of the party if you've not been invited. You know, you're just like I need to find out all the gossip about this and then you'll check like whatever someone's put on Instagram. Then you'll text them and message them and be like ooh what's this, what happened here and then the next day you won't talk about it at all".

Daisy also admitted to Chris that even at 3 am, 14 and 15-year-olds are still looking at their phones, "it's just checking what celebrities are doing and things. It's not even that I want to be on it, it's just that you do it instinctively, it's a habit".
