A Conservative MP wants tougher sentences to be handed out for dog thieves.

Gareth Johnson, who is MP for Dartford says the current sentencing guidelines give little regard to the fact that dogs are more than just possessions.

Becky Waites, who is the Public Affairs Manager for the animal charity Blue Cross, told ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 5 live Daily's Peter Allen that she wants to see tougher sentences for dog thieves.

She said: " We would like to see a specific reference to pet theft because of the emotional impact. It's different than having your mobile phone or laptop stolen.
