Mother hears teenage son with severe epilepsy speak for the first time

A mother from Hull has heard her 16-year-old son say the words “hello mum” for the first time thanks to new technology.

James Walker suffers from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, an aggressive form of epilepsy which left him unable to communicate in any way. A special computer screen now tracks his eye movements, and translates them into words.

His mother Gina said it was an “unbelievable and electric feeling” when she heard him speak.

It has also allowed her to learn about James’ jokey personality, especially when it comes to her singing. “I thought he loved it when I sing, but it turns out he absolutely hates it!”
