Ex-soldier denied 'life-changing' NHS surgery
A former soldier who lost a leg after an injury in battle has claimed he's been denied "life-changing" surgery on the NHS.
Chris, who has asked the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ not to reveal his surname, said he is hoping to travel to Germany for the treatment but it comes at a cost of £25,000. The charity Woundcare 4 Heroes is helping him to raise this money.
He was told by NHS England that his request for an operation - commonly known as osseo-integration - was not "exceptional" enough to warrant funding.
Chris said the nature of his amputation means he is "unable to wear a traditional prosthetic leg".
In response, NHS England told 5 live in a statement: We have commissioned an independent review into 'Direct Skeletal Fixation' which will report shortly and in the meantime we continue to work closely with rehabilitation centres to ensure that veterans can access high quality care.
