Hospital swab left inside man contributed to his death

More than 1,000 NHS patients in England in the past four years have suffered from medical mistakes so serious they should never happen.

More than 1,000 NHS patients in England in the past four years have suffered from medical mistakes so serious they should never happen.

Frank Hibbard died in 2014 from cancer. It was discovered that after ten years in agonising pain, a swab had been left in his pelvis after a prostate operation back in 2001.

The coroner concluded the death was caused by the combination of radiotherapy after prostate cancer and the cancer which had grown around the mass.

The family are now taking legal action against the hospital.

Frank's wife, Christine and her son Vince spoke to ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 5 live Daily's Peter Allen about the lack of information given to the family by the NHS about the medical error. "We knew nothing about it and they did nothing."

The hospital told the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ that they apologised sincerely for the error which "should never have happened". They added that they will "review any recommendations from the Coroner."
