Junior doctor: Working through a strike
Habiba Ali is a junior doctor at a Hospital in the North East. She made an audio diary for 5 live as she completed an overnight emergency cover shift during the 48 hour doctor's strike.
Dr Ali is a paediatric registrar, who unlike most of her colleagues, is not on the picket lines, but she "strongly" believes that striking and "saving our NHS" is the right thing for doctors to do.
NHS managers are warning that hospitals in England could face a backlog due to delays in discharging patients. More than five thousand operations and procedures have been cancelled during the 48 hour strike period.
The government says the new contracts are 'safe, fair and reasonable' and that the industrial action is 'irresponsible and unjustified'.
