Why you can't just destroy a bat roost

A record fine has been handed out to a property developer for destroying a bat roost.

Isar Enterprises has been ordered to pay almost £11,000 in costs and fines after failing to obtain the proper licence to remove the bats from offices they were developing in Derbyshire.

It is thought to be the first time that the Proceeds of Crime Act, a law normally used against drug dealers, has been used in a wildlife crime.

Hannah Van Hesteren from the National Bat Helpline said that bats are "really vulnerable" and are "in need of our help and protection".

She said that there have been "huge declines" in the last century and that "our actions can be very harmful" towards them, particularly because so many bats are building roosts in buildings rather than in the wild.
