One of world's biggest tunnels to link Manchester and Sheffield?

Proposals have been drawn up for an eighteen mile-long road tunnel linking Manchester to Sheffield.

The tunnel would be 'one of the biggest in the world' according to Lord Adonis, chair of the National Infrastructure Commission.

Adonis said "there are no two cities in Europe as badly connected as Manchester and Sheffield."

He added that there needs to be "big improvements in transport in Northern cities" with "immediate electrification of the Manchester to Leeds railway line and big upgrades to the M62."

The proposals form part of the third report by the Commission which was asked by government to advise on improvements to transport connectivity in the North.
