Pensioner: GP closure makes me feel 'scared'
A 5 live investigation has revealed that 171 GP surgeries closed in England in the three years to October 2015. It found that a third of these are due to contracts being terminated or not renewed and another third due to mergers.
The British Medical Association says it's worried about further closures, as demand on GPs increases; while the Royal College of GPs says such closures can have a negative impact on patients.
Patient June Holmes whose local Health Care Centre is closing, told Adrian Chiles that she feels "scared" about not having a local GP.
She said: "We’re able to trust the doctors here, we have a relationship with them and they know us."
The Department of Health says it's always been the case that some GP practices open, close, or merge over time, but that patient care is paramount.
