Police could employ cat after 5-year-old writes in

A police force could become the first in the country to introduce cats in the fight against crime, after a five-year-old girl wrote to the Chief Constable.

Eliza wrote to Durham Police to ask why they have police dogs, but no police cats. She made the point that cats can “listen for danger” and “guide people who are stuck in trees”.

Police chief Mike Barton replied to Eliza’s letter and passed it on to Inspector Richie Allen, of the dog support unit, who said he could “confirm the force is looking into recruiting what we believe to be the first UK police cat”.

Cheryl, who is Eliza’s mum, said they were happy to receive the letter and “it looks as if” the Durham Police are going to adopt a cat from a local shelter.
