Paperless passports: the future of international travel?
Could we be moving into an era where we can roam the world with paperless passports? Perhaps you've already caught a plane with a boarding card app on your mobile phone, but how would you feel about a totally digital passport? The world's biggest passport manufacturer, De La Rue, says it's developing the technology. But are there security concerns, and would we miss the romance of collecting stamps in our paper passports or laughing at our outdated photos with terrible haircuts? Simon Calder, the senior travel editor of the Independent online newspaper, told Rebecca Kesby how it would work.
